You are paying for clicks. The reports show people arriving. But the phone is quiet, the inbox is empty or the store has no orders. This is the most common complaint business owners have about Google Ads, and it is rarely one single fault.
The good news is that the causes are limited and they can be checked in a fixed order. This guide walks through that order, so you fix the real problem first.
Why Clicks Without Leads Or Sales Happens
A click only means someone was curious enough to visit. Between that click and a lead or sale, four things must all work.
| Stage | Question | If It Fails |
|---|---|---|
| Tracking | Is a lead or sale being recorded when it happens? | You may be getting results and not seeing them |
| Search intent | Are the right people clicking? | You pay for visitors who were never going to buy |
| Landing page | Can a ready buyer act quickly? | Good visitors leave without contacting you |
| Offer | Is what you sell, at that price, what they want? | People compare and choose someone else |
QUICK RULE
Check the stages in this order. Each one depends on the one before it. A better landing page cannot fix the wrong searches, and no change can be judged while tracking is broken.
Step 1: Confirm Conversions Are Being Tracked
Before assuming nobody converts, prove that a conversion would be recorded if it happened. Many accounts with “no leads” are in fact missing calls, form submissions or purchases in their reports.
- Submit your own form, call your own number and, for a store, place a test order.
- Check that each action appears in Google Ads as a conversion within a day or two.
- Compare the count in Google Ads with your inbox, phone log, CRM or store orders for the same dates.
- Confirm the campaign is set to optimize for those conversions, not for page views or clicks.
If your business gets most enquiries by phone, call tracking matters as much as form tracking. Our conversion tracking guide covers the full setup, and the free conversion tracking checker shows which tags are on a page.
TWO DIFFERENT PROBLEMS
“People are not converting” and “Google Ads is not recording conversions” look identical in a report. Only your own business records can tell them apart.
Step 2: Read What People Actually Searched
Your keywords are what you asked for. The search terms report shows what you got. Open it and read the searches behind your clicks for the last 30 days.
| What You See | What It Means | What To Do |
|---|---|---|
| Searches for jobs, courses, free or DIY | Research or irrelevant intent | Add negative keywords |
| Searches for a service you do not offer | Keyword too broad | Tighten keywords or match types |
| Searches from outside your area | Location settings too wide | Target people in your area, not interested in it |
| Competitor brand names | People looking for someone else | Exclude, unless you chose this on purpose |
| Exactly the searches you want | Traffic is not the problem | Move to Step 3 |
If a large share of spend goes to the first four rows, you have found the main cause. See our Google Ads optimization guide for search term reviews and negative keywords, or build a starting list with the free negative keyword generator.
Step 3: Check The Landing Page Like A Customer
If tracking works and the searches are right, look at the page those visitors land on. Open it on your phone, because that is where most ad clicks happen.
- Does the headline match what the person searched for?
- Is it obvious within a few seconds what you offer and where?
- Is there one clear next step: call, book or request a quote?
- Does the phone number work as a tap-to-call link?
- Is the form short, and does it actually submit?
- Does the page load quickly on mobile data?
- Is there proof a stranger can trust: reviews, photos of real work, licences?
Sending every ad to the home page is a common fault. A visitor who searched for one specific service should land on a page about that service. The free landing page checker gives a Google speed score and a conversion checklist, and our landing page guide goes deeper.
DO NOT GUESS
A page you think looks good may still fail a visitor in a hurry. Ask someone outside the business to find your phone number and send an enquiry on their phone, and watch where they hesitate.
Step 4: Look Honestly At The Offer
Sometimes tracking, traffic and page are all sound, and people still choose a competitor. Then the question is about the offer itself.
- Is your price shown, and is it far above what others advertise?
- Do competitors offer something you do not, such as same-day service, free quotes or free shipping?
- Are you asking for too much commitment for a first step?
- Is your product or service one that people buy after comparing several options?
Search for your own main keyword and look at the ads and pages beside yours. If every competitor offers a free quote and you ask visitors to “contact us for information”, the ad click was never the weak point.
Ecommerce: Clicks But No Sales
For online stores the same order applies, with a few store-specific checks.
| Check | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
| Purchase tracking and order value | Without it, Shopping and Performance Max optimize blindly |
| Product price against competitors in Shopping results | Shopping shows prices side by side |
| Shipping cost and delivery time at checkout | Surprise costs end many orders |
| Product feed titles and images | They decide which searches you appear for |
| Margin per product | A sale can still lose money after ad cost |

Local Services: Clicks But No Calls
Local service businesses usually live on phone calls, so the checks lean that way.
- Are ads running at hours when someone answers the phone?
- Are calls from ads tracked as conversions, with a minimum length?
- Is location targeting limited to the area you serve?
- Do the ads and page name the service and the area?
- Are missed calls returned quickly?
A lead that nobody answers is lost, however good the campaign is. The lead response calculator shows what slow replies cost in your own numbers.
How Many Clicks Before You Judge?
A handful of clicks proves nothing in either direction. As a rough guide, work out how many clicks you would expect to need for one lead at a realistic conversion rate, then wait for several times that number before deciding a campaign has failed.
For example, if one in twenty visitors would normally enquire, twenty clicks with no lead is normal variation. A few hundred relevant clicks with nothing is a signal that something in the four stages is broken.
SMALL NUMBERS MISLEAD
Decide with enough data. Stopping a campaign after a small number of clicks, or doubling the budget after one good day, are the same mistake.
What Not To Do First
| Tempting Fix | Why It Usually Fails |
|---|---|
| Raise the budget | More of the same traffic gives more of the same result |
| Raise bids | A higher position does not fix the wrong searches or a weak page |
| Switch bidding strategy | Automated bidding needs correct conversions to learn from |
| Rebuild the whole account | You lose the data that shows where the fault is |
| Change five things at once | You will not know which change helped |
A Simple Order To Work Through
- Test every conversion yourself and compare Google Ads with your own records.
- Read 30 days of search terms and block irrelevant ones.
- Check location, schedule and device settings.
- Review the landing page on a phone and fix the obvious gaps.
- Compare your offer with the competitors shown for the same search.
- Change one thing, wait for enough clicks, and record the result.

Final Takeaway: Find The Broken Stage Before You Spend More
Clicks without leads or sales is a symptom, not a diagnosis. The cause sits in one of four places: tracking, search intent, landing page or offer. Checking them in order is faster and cheaper than changing budgets and bids and hoping.
Once you know which stage is failing, the fix is usually specific and small. Make it, measure it, and only then decide whether the campaign deserves more budget.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Why am I getting clicks but no leads from Google Ads?
The usual causes are broken conversion tracking, clicks from the wrong searches, a landing page that makes it hard to act, or an offer that is weaker than competitors. Check them in that order.
How many clicks should I get before expecting a lead?
It depends on your normal conversion rate. If about one in twenty visitors enquires, twenty clicks without a lead is normal. A few hundred relevant clicks with no lead points to a real fault.
Should I increase my budget if I get clicks but no sales?
No. More budget buys more of the same traffic. Find and fix the failing stage first, then decide whether to spend more.
Could my landing page alone cause zero leads?
It can, especially if the form is broken, the phone number is not clickable or the page does not match the search. But confirm tracking and search terms first, because those problems are just as common.
Why does Performance Max spend money without sales?
Often because purchase tracking or order values are missing or wrong, so the campaign optimizes toward the wrong signal. Product price, shipping cost and feed quality are the next things to check.
Is it normal to see no conversions in the first few days?
Yes. A new campaign needs time and clicks before results are meaningful. Use the first days to confirm tracking works and the searches are relevant.
Can JuvioX check my account?
Yes. Request a free audit and a specialist will review your campaigns, tracking and landing pages and send a prioritized list of fixes.
