    Quick answer

How do I write a good title tag and meta description?

Keep the title tag to about 50 to 60 characters with the main keyword near the start, and the meta description to about 150 to 160 characters with a clear benefit and a reason to click. Google cuts off longer text by pixel width, so preview it before publishing.

How long should a title tag be?

Google cuts titles by pixel width, not character count. Keeping titles under about 580 pixels, roughly 50 to 60 characters, keeps them from being truncated on desktop.

Will Google always show my meta description?

No. Google often writes its own snippet from the page when it thinks that matches the search better. A clear, relevant description still improves the odds it is used.

Does the meta description affect rankings?

Not directly. It affects how many searchers click your result, which is why it is worth writing well.

Why does Google change my title tag?

Google sometimes rewrites titles that are too long, stuffed with keywords or do not match the page. A clear, accurate title that matches your H1 is the best way to keep yours.

Should every page have a unique title and description?

Yes. Duplicate titles and descriptions make it harder for Google to tell pages apart and can lower clicks. Write a unique one for every important page.
