You do not rank in ChatGPT the way you rank on Google. When ChatGPT searches the web, it reads pages from search results and picks sources that answer the question clearly. To be mentioned, rank well in normal search, answer questions directly on your pages, and be named on other sites that people trust.

How Does ChatGPT Search Work?

ChatGPT search turns a question into one or more web searches, reads the pages that come back and writes an answer with citations. It is a search-and-summarize step, not a separate index you submit pages to.

OpenAI’s help article on searching the web with ChatGPT describes the steps, as of October 2026:

  1. Decide to search. ChatGPT may search the web automatically when a question would benefit from current information. A user can also start a search manually.
  2. Rewrite the question. It typically rewrites the query into one or more targeted queries. If memory is on, saved memories may shape the rewrite.
  3. Send to providers. Those queries go to the search providers it works with. It may use an approximate location, based on IP address, for local results.
  4. Answer with sources. Answers that use search may include citations, and a Sources button lists cited pages.

OpenAI says web search is available on every ChatGPT plan and to people who are not signed in. When no search runs, the answer comes from what the model learned in training, which you cannot change in the short term.

Step two is where the practical lesson sits. If someone asks “what is the best project management tool for a ten-person agency,” you are not competing for that sentence. You are competing for the narrower searches ChatGPT writes from it. Pages built around a specific need for a specific kind of customer have more chances to match.

Does ChatGPT Use Google or Bing?

OpenAI does not say that ChatGPT uses Google or Bing by name. Its help article says ChatGPT search “sometimes partners with other search providers” and links to Microsoft’s and Shopify’s privacy policies, as of October 2026.

OpenAI also runs its own search crawler. Its crawler documentation says OAI-SearchBot is used to surface websites in ChatGPT’s search features, and its publisher FAQ says sites should make sure they are not blocking it.

For a site owner, the answer matters less than it sounds. A safe setup covers all three:

  • Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and in any firewall or CDN bot settings.
  • Make sure your site is indexed in Bing as well as Google, and submit your sitemap to both.
  • Keep up the SEO that gets you indexed and ranking, since the same pages serve every search engine.

Plenty of businesses have only ever set up Google. If that is you, adding Bing is a short job with a clear reason behind it.

What Kind of Pages Does ChatGPT Cite?

ChatGPT tends to cite pages that answer the specific question plainly and can be read as text. OpenAI does not publish its selection criteria, so the reliable way to learn what gets cited in your market is to read the sources under real answers.

When you do, a few page types come up again and again:

  • One-question pages. The answer sits in the first lines, with detail below.
  • Comparison and “best of” pages. Independent roundups, review sites and forum threads that name several options.
  • Reference pages. Pricing, specs, service areas, policies and definitions in plain text.
  • Current pages. For questions where the date matters, a page with a visible, recent update date.

By business type: a dental practice is more likely to be picked up from a page titled “How much do dental implants cost in Tampa?” than from a general services page. An online running store gains from category pages that say who each shoe suits. A software company gains from honest “X vs Y” pages and from its review-site listings.

How Do You Get Mentioned in ChatGPT Answers?

You get mentioned by being eligible, being clear and being named by others, in that order. Most people searching “how to show up in ChatGPT” or “how to get mentioned in ChatGPT” skip the first step and start with content.

  1. Be eligible. Allow OAI-SearchBot and confirm your key pages are indexed. OpenAI says robots.txt changes can take about 24 hours to reach its search systems.
  2. Answer real questions. List what buyers ask before they choose. Give each question a page or a clear section, answer first.
  3. Put facts in text. Pricing or how it works, locations, specs, who it is for. Not in images, not behind a form.
  4. Rank in normal search. ChatGPT reads pages that search providers return. A page nobody can find is unlikely to be read.
  5. Get named elsewhere. Roundups, directories, review sites and industry publications are often the pages ChatGPT cites.
  6. Keep details consistent. The same name, description and contact details on every site that lists you.

What this looks like varies by business. A roofing company in Denver needs one page per service, its service area written out, and a place on the local roundups and directories ChatGPT cites for “best roofer in Denver.” An online skincare brand needs ingredient lists, skin types and return terms in text on each product page, plus coverage in independent reviews. A B2B accounting software company needs plain pages on pricing, integrations and who the product is for, and up-to-date profiles on the review sites buyers compare. The steps are the same; the pages and the outside sites differ.

If you have done most of this and still do not appear, our guide on why your business is not showing up in ChatGPT walks through the usual causes.

How Do You Check Where You Stand?

Check three things: whether ChatGPT can reach you, whether it mentions you and whether it sends you visitors. None of them is a “rank.”

  • Access. Read your robots.txt, look in server logs for the OAI-SearchBot user agent, and search “site:yourdomain.com” in Bing and Google.
  • Mentions. Run a fixed list of customer questions several times each, with memory off or signed out so your own history does not shape the result. Record who is named and which sources are cited.
  • Visits. OpenAI says ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral links, so the traffic can be reported in analytics. Our tracking and analytics team sets this up as a standard report.

What Is Hype and What Is Proven?

Proven means OpenAI or Google has written it down. Most “ChatGPT SEO” advice is not in that group. Some is still sensible, and some is invented.
