Google Ads call tracking counts phone calls as conversions: calls placed straight from your ads, calls from your website after someone clicks an ad, and taps on your phone number. You set it up as phone call conversion actions in Google Ads, using Google forwarding numbers or a call tracking tool, then import the calls that actually became customers.
How Do You Track Phone Calls From Google Ads as Conversions?
You create one phone call conversion action for each way people call you. Google’s call conversion guide lists five types, and each one measures something different.
| Call type | What it counts | Needs |
| Calls from ads | Calls from call assets, location assets or call-only ads | Call reporting on |
| Calls to a website number | Calls after an ad click, to a number on your site | Google tag + phone snippet |
| Clicks on a mobile number | Taps on a phone link or button | A click tag |
| Clicks on call ads/assets | Clicks, with Google estimating if a call followed | No forwarding number |
| Imported calls | Calls your CRM or call tool marks as valuable | Caller data from your system |
Calls from ads, calls to a website number and imported calls all rely on Google forwarding numbers, which are available in the United States and a list of other countries as of October 2026. The rest of this guide sets them up in the order most businesses need them. For the broader decision on which call tracking approach fits your business, our overview of tracking phone calls from Google Ads has a quick checklist; this guide is the hands-on setup.
What You Need Before You Start
Step 1: Turn On Call Reporting
Google’s call reporting page says it is managed in Account settings, in the Call reporting section. When it’s on, Google shows a forwarding number on your call and location assets and records each call’s start time, duration, whether it connected and, for calls over 15 seconds, the caller’s number.
What’s the Difference Between Calls From Ads and Calls From Your Website?
Calls from ads happen right on the search results page, before anyone visits your site. Calls from your website happen after someone clicks the ad, lands on your page and dials the number there. Both matter, and they’re set up separately.
Step 2: Create a “Calls From Ads” Conversion Action
Google’s setup guide for calls from ads gives this path: in the Goals menu, go to Summary, select Create conversion action, then Conversions from phone calls. Choose the Phone call lead category and pick Calls from ads. You need a call or location asset with a verified number, and call reporting must be on.
Google can count these calls in two ways: by AI analysis of call recordings, which it recommends enabling, or by counting calls longer than the minimum duration you set. If recording is off, it falls back to your duration setting.
How Do You Set Up Google Forwarding Numbers and Website Call Tracking Through GTM?
Create a “Calls from website visits” conversion action, then add Google’s phone snippet so your site shows a forwarding number to visitors who arrived from an ad. You can install it with Google Tag Manager or directly in your site code.
Step 3: Add the Website Call Conversion in Google Tag Manager
In GTM, create a new tag and choose the “Google Ads Calls from Website Conversion” tag type. Enter the phone number exactly as it appears on your site, plus the Conversion ID and Label from Google Ads. Google’s guide notes the GTM tag doesn’t support international number formats, so use the national format without a plus sign, and that ads can take up to an hour to be enabled for the new conversion action. Following a clear naming convention keeps the container readable:
Tag: Google Ads - Calls From Website - Tag
Trigger: All PagesIf you install it in code instead, Google’s snippet replaces the number on the page for ad visitors:
<script>
gtag('config', 'AW-XXXXXXXXX/XXXXXXXXXXX', {
'phone_conversion_number': 'REPLACE WITH YOUR NUMBER'
});
</script>Three limits from Google’s guide are worth knowing before you choose a method. The default tag tracks only one number per page. GTM installs can’t verify your domain through the Google tag, so link Search Console to Google Ads to verify it instead. And the GTM option isn’t recommended if you already use dynamic number insertion (DNI) or a third-party call tracking tool.
What’s the Difference Between a Phone-Number Click and an Actual Call?
A click conversion only records that someone tapped your number; Google’s guide is explicit that it can’t track the call itself. Use it as a supporting signal, not as your main lead conversion.
Step 4: Track Clicks on Your Phone Number (Optional)
In GTM, create a Google Ads conversion tag that fires on clicks whose URL starts with tel:. Set it as a secondary conversion in Google Ads so it’s reported but doesn’t steer Smart Bidding, unless clicks are truly the best signal you have.
Tag: Google Ads - Phone Click - Tag
Trigger: Phone Click
(Click - Just Links, Click URL starts with tel:)| Business type | Main call conversion | Supporting signal |
| Plumber, HVAC, roofer | Calls from ads + website calls | Phone clicks |
| Dental or medical clinic | Website calls, then booked visits imported | Calls from ads |
| Law firm | Imported qualified calls | Website calls |
| Ecommerce with phone orders | Imported calls with order value | Phone clicks |
How Do You Stop Short, Spam and Missed Calls From Counting?
Set a minimum call length on each call conversion action so only calls long enough to be real enquiries count. Google counts a call as a conversion only when it lasts longer than the length you set, and the right number depends on how long a genuine first call takes in your business.
- Pick the threshold from your own calls: look at the call details report for a few weeks and note how long a real enquiry usually lasts compared with spam and wrong numbers.
- Use recording where it fits: for calls from ads, Google recommends call recording so its AI can judge which calls were real leads.
- Separate repeat callers: existing customers calling about an invoice aren’t new leads. Some call tools can report first-time and repeat callers as separate conversions.
- Count only one primary call action per path: if a call is counted by both Google’s snippet and a third-party tool, you’ll double the leads.
If you’re getting plenty of calls but few jobs, the problem may be targeting or call handling rather than tracking; our guide to Google Ads calls that don’t turn into booked jobs covers that side.
Should You Use Google Forwarding Numbers or a Tool Like CallRail?
Google’s own forwarding numbers are built into Google Ads and cover the basics. A dedicated call tracking tool adds recordings, keyword-level detail across every channel, CRM integrations and dynamic numbers for SEO, social and email traffic, not just Google Ads.
| Need | Google forwarding numbers | Call tracking tool |
| Count calls from Google Ads | Yes | Yes |
| Track calls from SEO, Meta, email | No | Yes |
| Recordings and call notes | Limited | Usually yes |
| Send qualified calls to Google Ads | Via manual import | Usually via integration |
Popular options include CallRail and WhatConverts; compare features and pricing on each vendor’s own site. With CallRail, its help center says calls are sent to Google Ads as conversions through visitor tracking, which captures the click ID, and that auto-tagging must be on. It can report all calls as one “Phone Call” conversion or split first-time and repeat callers, and renaming that conversion in Google Ads stops the sync. Whatever tool you pick, use it or Google’s website snippet for website calls, not both.
How Do You Connect Calls to Booked Jobs in Your CRM and Send Them Back to Google Ads?
Record which calls became appointments or sales in your CRM or call tool, then import those outcomes into Google Ads as a separate conversion. This is how bidding learns the difference between a two-minute price shopper and a booked job.
Step 5: Import Qualified Calls
Create a conversion action using Calls via uploads, then upload a file or scheduled Google Sheet. Google’s import guide requires the caller’s phone number, the call start time and the conversion name spelled exactly as in Google Ads; conversion time, value and currency are optional. The calls must have gone through Google forwarding numbers, so this works for calls from ads and website calls tracked with Google’s snippet.
- Wait at least four hours after creating the conversion action before the first upload.
- Include an extra day of data in each upload, since very recent calls may not be recorded yet; duplicates aren’t counted twice.
- Check the file before uploading: Google says imported conversions can’t be removed.
If you use a call tracking tool, it can usually send qualified calls through its own Google Ads integration instead, typically using the click ID (gclid) it captured when the visitor landed. Calls and form leads often end up in the same CRM pipeline, and our guide to offline conversion tracking from your CRM covers sending closed deals back to Google Ads. For appointment-based businesses, see tracking booked appointments from Google Ads.
How Do You Test Your Google Ads Call Tracking?
Click your own ad, call the number shown and stay on the line past your minimum call length, then check the conversion a few hours later. Google suggests deleting the gwcc cookie before each repeat test of website calls, so every test starts fresh.
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
| Website shows your normal number | Snippet not firing or wrong number entered | Match the exact digits on the page; check the tag fires |
| Number swaps on some elements only | Default tag swaps one number per page | Use the CSS class option or a call tool |
| Calls show but no conversions | Calls shorter than your threshold | Review call lengths and the threshold |
| Zero call conversions overall | Call reporting off or no call asset | Turn on call reporting; add a call asset |
| Calls in CallRail, not in Google Ads | Auto-tagging off or conversion renamed | Turn on auto-tagging; keep the original name |
| Leads doubled | Google snippet and call tool both counting | Keep one source as primary |
| Import rejected | Conversion name or time format wrong | Copy the exact name; use Google’s template |
If calls track but your other conversions still look wrong, our guide to Google Ads conversion tracking with Google Tag Manager and the fixes in Google Ads conversion tracking not working cover the rest of the setup.
Is Call Tracking Worth It for a Small Business?
If phone calls are how most of your customers reach you, yes. Without it, Google Ads only sees form fills and optimizes toward them, while the calls that pay your bills go unmeasured. A simple setup with calls from ads, website calls and a sensible minimum length can be done in an afternoon; importing booked jobs is the upgrade that makes bidding smarter.
If you’d rather have it set up and checked for you, our Google Ads management runs month-to-month with no lock-in, and our Tracking & Analytics service can handle the call tracking alone. Both start with a free audit.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Are Google Forwarding Numbers Enough, or Do I Need CallRail or WhatConverts?
Google's forwarding numbers are enough if you only want to count calls from Google Ads and your website visitors who came from those ads. A call tracking tool becomes worth it when you also need to measure calls from SEO, social or email, want recordings and call notes for every call, or want qualified calls sent to Google Ads automatically from a CRM.
Why Are My Google Ads Call Conversions Showing Zero When Customers Are Calling?
The most common reasons are that call reporting is off, there is no call or location asset with a forwarding number, the website snippet isn't swapping the number, or every call is shorter than the minimum length you set. Many customers also call the number on your Google Business Profile or a printed card, which Google Ads can't link to an ad click.
Why Isn't My Dynamic Number Insertion Swapping the Number for Google Ads Visitors?
Usually the script isn't loading on that page, auto-tagging is off so the visit can't be recognized as a paid click, or the number on the page doesn't exactly match the number the script looks for. Also check that a caching or optimization plugin isn't delaying or removing the script, and test in a fresh private window after clicking an ad.
Will Dynamic Call Tracking Numbers Hurt My Local SEO?
Not if the swap only happens in the visitor's browser and your real number stays in the page code, your structured data and your Google Business Profile. Keep one consistent business number everywhere Google and directories read it, and let the tracking script show different numbers only to visitors.
Can Google Ads Tell a 15-Second Spam Call From a Five-Minute Sales Call?
Only if you tell it how. With a minimum call length, short calls simply don't count. For calls from ads, call recording lets Google's AI judge which calls were real leads. The most reliable method is importing the calls your team marked as qualified or booked, so the conversion reflects the outcome rather than the duration.
Can I Use CallRail to See Which Keywords Generate Phone Calls?
Yes, when visitor tracking is set up. CallRail says adding a keyword parameter to your Google Ads tracking template is recommended so keyword data appears in CallRail; without it, calls can still be sent to Google Ads as conversions, where you can see them by campaign and keyword.
