ChatGPT ads are bought in an auction, with bidding by click or by impression, and there is a daily minimum per campaign. As of October 2026 there is no large upfront commitment. What you pay depends on your bid, how relevant your ad is to the conversation, and how many advertisers want the same audience.
If you are asking how much do ChatGPT ads cost because you need a number for a budget meeting, start here: there is no rate card. The price of a click comes out of an auction each time an ad is shown. This post explains how that auction works, what moves your price and how to set a first budget. If you would rather have it managed, see our ChatGPT Ads service.
How Are ChatGPT Ads Priced?
ChatGPT ads are priced through an auction that weighs your bid against how relevant your ad is. OpenAI’s “Ads in ChatGPT: The Basics” page describes it as a relevance-weighted, second-price auction.
What you are billed for depends on the campaign objective, as of October 2026:
| Objective | Billed by | Good for |
| Views | Per 1,000 impressions (CPM) | Getting seen |
| Clicks | Per valid click (CPC) | Traffic and leads |
| Conversions | Per click or impression (oCPC or oCPM) | Optimizing toward a sale or lead |
OpenAI’s billing page is explicit that ads are not billed per conversion. Even a Conversions campaign charges for clicks or impressions; the conversion goal only changes who the system shows your ad to.
Bids are set on each ad group, and there are two ways to bid:
- Maximize results. The platform sets and adjusts bids for you, aiming for as many results as the budget allows. It is the default for eligible new ad groups, and OpenAI says it does not guarantee a specific cost per click or cost per acquisition.
- Manual: Max bid. You set the most you will bid. Use this when you need to stay under a cost limit.
“Second-price” means the auction is built so you generally pay what it takes to win, not your full maximum. “Relevance-weighted” means a well-matched ad can beat a higher bid from a poor match. Relevance is the one lever that can lower your price without lowering your reach.
CPC or CPM: Which Should You Choose?
Choose CPC if you want traffic and leads; choose CPM only if being seen is the goal in itself. For a first test, paying per click is usually the safer choice.
| Clicks (CPC) | Views (CPM) | |
| You pay for | Each valid click | Each 1,000 impressions |
| Best for | Leads and sales | Brand awareness |
| Main risk | Clicks that don’t convert | Views nobody clicks |
| Easy to judge? | Yes | Harder |
A plumbing company or a software firm that wants inquiries should start with Clicks. A consumer brand with money set aside for a product launch has a reason to test Views. Once conversion tracking works, a Conversions campaign becomes an option.
ChatGPT ads CPM and ChatGPT ads CPC are not directly comparable. A cheap CPM can still mean an expensive click if few people click, so convert both into cost per lead or sale before you compare.
Is There a Minimum Spend?
Yes, but it is small. OpenAI’s daily budgets page lists a standard minimum daily budget of $25 per campaign for US accounts as of October 2026, and describes no account-level minimum.
Three details change what that minimum means in practice:
- The daily budget is an average. OpenAI averages it over seven days. One day can spend up to twice the daily budget, and seven days can spend up to seven times it. At $25 a day, that is up to $50 in one day and $175 in a week.
- Your budget must cover your bid. With a manual bid, the daily budget must be at least as high as your highest bid.
- A campaign-total budget caps the whole campaign. If you need a hard ceiling for a test, set a total budget instead of a daily one.

What Changes Your Cost per Click?
Your cost per click moves with your bid, your relevance and your competition. You control the first two directly.
| Factor | Effect on cost |
| Bid and bid strategy | Higher bids win more often at a higher price. Automated bidding chases volume. |
| Ad and page relevance | A closer match to the conversation can win at a lower price. |
| Context hints | Broad hints pull you into loosely related, often pricier auctions. |
| Competition | High-value categories like software, finance and legal draw more bidders. |
| Location | Narrow targeting means fewer conversations to compete for. |
If you see a ChatGPT ads high CPC in your account, check these in order: are your context hints too broad, does the landing page answer the topic you are targeting, and is automated bidding paying more than a click is worth to you? Switching to a manual maximum bid puts a ceiling on it. Note that OpenAI says spend reporting can lag by 7 to 8 hours, so judge costs on full days, not mid-afternoon.
Finding Your Break-Even Click Price
The right CPC for you is any price below your break-even, and that number is different for every business. OpenAI publishes no average. Its suggestion of a $3 to $5 starting maximum bid for Clicks campaigns, as of October 2026, is a place to begin, not a benchmark.
- Decide the most you can pay for a lead or sale and still make money.
- Take the share of landing page visitors who convert on your other paid channels.
- Multiply the two. That is your break-even cost per click.
As an example only: if you can pay $100 for a lead and 1 in 20 visitors becomes a lead, your break-even click is $5. Paying $3 leaves margin. Paying $8 loses money on every lead, however good the click-through rate looks.
How Do Costs Compare With Google Ads?
Both platforms price ads by auction, so neither is cheaper as a rule. Your cost on each depends on your industry, your bids and your competitors.
The differences that matter for cost are about control:
- Bidding toward a cost target. Google’s Smart Bidding help page lists Target CPA and Target ROAS strategies, which set bids in each auction to aim for a cost or return goal. OpenAI says its automated strategy does not guarantee a cost target yet.
- Targeting. ChatGPT ads use context hints, which OpenAI notes are not exact-match keywords. More of your cost control therefore comes from your bid and your landing page.
- Maturity. A newer auction has less predictable prices while advertisers are still arriving.
So are ChatGPT ads expensive? It depends on what a click turns into. Compare cost per lead or sale on both platforms using the same conversion definition. How Do You Set a Test Budget?
Work back from the number of clicks you need to make a decision, then check the total against what you can afford to lose.
- Find your break-even CPC using the steps above.
- Decide how many clicks you need to expect several conversions at your usual conversion rate.
- Multiply clicks by your expected CPC. With no data yet, use your maximum bid.
- Spread it over several weeks and judge by week, since the daily budget averages over seven days.
- Use a campaign-total budget if you need a hard ceiling.
- Count management separately. Agency fees sit on top of ad spend. JuvioX charges a flat monthly management fee, month-to-month with no lock-in.
Knowing how OpenAI bills also prevents surprises. According to its billing page, as of October 2026:
- Self-serve accounts pay by credit card after ads are delivered.
- Your card is charged when unpaid spend reaches a payment threshold ($25 in OpenAI’s example) and at month end for any balance.
- Adding a card can create a temporary authorization hold, which is not a charge.
- Ads can keep running for up to 24 hours after a pause, and that spend is billable.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Can you buy ads on ChatGPT?
Yes. Eligible businesses can create an account in OpenAI’s Ads Manager, add a card and build campaigns. Ads appear below ChatGPT’s responses and are labeled as sponsored. Access depends on your country, and accounts are reviewed before ads can run.
Are ChatGPT ads expensive?
The cost to start is low, but the cost per result varies widely. Competitive categories attract higher bids, and a weak landing page makes any click expensive. Judge the channel on cost per lead or sale compared with your other channels, not on click price alone.
What is a good CPC for ChatGPT ads?
A good CPC is any price below your break-even, which is the most you can pay for a lead or sale multiplied by your landing page conversion rate. OpenAI suggests a starting maximum bid of $3 to $5 for Clicks campaigns as of October 2026, but that is a starting point, not an average.
Do you pay for impressions or clicks?
Either, depending on the objective. Views campaigns bill per thousand impressions, Clicks campaigns bill per valid click, and Conversions campaigns aim at a conversion goal but still bill for clicks or impressions. You never pay per conversion.
